a festival that involves over 40 local and international artists and six
venues, this exhibition will host a diverse range of audio, and
audio-visual installations. US based sound experimenter, Subscape
Annex
, has used the potentially explosive technique of combining
electricity and water in a work that involves sound from dripping
water across the contact of an instrument cable jack.

Norie Neumark and Maria Miranda dissect and interrogate
the iconic Aussie cop drama, ‘Homicide’ (said to be the most important
and popular television drama series ever produced in the country) in
‘Homicide Rumours’ — a sound slash fiction. Like old episodes of
Doctor Who, these Homicide mashups conjure sensations of familiarity
and sentimentality, as well as disappointment and even embarrassment.
Our memories live in the original – past – moment; our hazy dream is
shattered by the harsh reality of the now.

The opening will feature a performance by renowned theatre artists
Leisa Shelton and Jethro Woodward. Other artists include: Jordana
Maisie, Vienna Parreno, Monperro (Spain), David O’Donoghue, Krzysztof
Osinski, Ashley S
cott, Greg Shapley, Cara-Ann Simpson, and the 2203
Collective.

Sound of Failure Festival, Main exhibition opening:
Chrissie Cotter Gallery, Pidcock St, Camperdown
Opening August 19, 6pm (FREE), August 20-September 7

The following evening is the opening of Wade Marynowsky’s stunning
solo exhibition at Don’t Look Gallery, ‘Rococo Vortex’. This
exhibition explores 18th century European notions of the automaton,
elegance, decadence and how these have filtered down into contemporary
Australian kitsch culture.

WE CAN NOT EXIST IN THIS WORLD ALONE

Tuesday, 5 August, 2008
8:00 pmto11:00 pm

THE FILMS OF BEN RIVERS + BEN RUSSELL (UK / US)

Ten visionary cinematic dispatches from two of contemporary experimental film’s most uncompromising artists. Ranging from mind-blowing psychedelia to trance film documentary (filmed during a performance by Rhode Island noise band Lightning Bolt) to Scottish hermit ethnography (in Cinemascope!), these films sketch a portrait of a modern world in increasingly hopeful disarray.
