PIANO CONCERT: CHRIS ABRAHAMS / HERMIONE JOHNSON / MONICA BROOKS

Saturday, 5 May, 2012
8:00 pmto11:00 pm

Well now, this wee piano concert will be of the utmost enjoyment to those of you keen to hear the largest of furniture items being played on its own. For those less inclined towards something that sounds hideously traditional through its definition, fear not, there is no Mozart, no Mendelssohn nor Billy Joel to be heard. This is an evening of three solo experimental innovations with the piano by Chris Abrahams, Hermione Johnson (NZ), and Monica Brooks.

Chris is best known as being the piano player in The Necks Outside of the group Chris is very busy with numerous other projects, not least of which is performing solo piano concerts. Over the years Chris has performed solo piano concerts in both Australia and Europe - he most recently played at the Bath Festival in the UK. He has released four solo piano albums and hopes to release a fifth later this year. This will be his first solo performance in Sydney for a couple of years and his last Australian gig for a few months.

Hermione is a composer and pianist living in Wellington, New Zealand. In recent times she has improvised with Cor Fuhler, Dave Brown, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten and Sean Baxter, appeared solo at Exploritorium in Berlin, the Adam Art Gallery’s Designs for Living Exhibition in Wellington, and Auckland’s Tea Party. She’s also played at the NOW Now, Fredstock, and iiii Festivals.

Monica is a Sydney-based improviser, mostly known for her accordion performances with Great Waitress, Altman/Brooks duo, and Splinter Orchestra. Monica’s piano approach is heavily influenced by daytime soap-opera sound tracks, Australian piano heavy-weights, Alice Coltrane, and large, resonating buildings.

Diffuse Season 2: Clocks and Clouds @ Bon Marche Studio UTS

Thursday, 3 May, 2012
6:30 pmto10:00 pm

Thursday 3 May 6.30pm
Clocks and Clouds - Kraig Grady and Terumi Narushima with Finn Ryan.

Pump-organ and custom-tuned metallic percussion instruments hand built by Kraig Grady for his original compositions. These unique instruments – with their pure harmonic tuning – explore the beauty of room resonances via ancient sacred scales and multi-dimensional geometries.

Performing excerpts from 97 Fossilized Blossoms
for Meta-slendro Vibraphone l & ll, Meta-slendro Harmonium and The Meru Bars

Meta Slendro refers to the tuning shared on all the instruments. Slendro is a common tuning family found in java and on other Indonesian islands under similar names. This tuning invented by Erv Wilson is tuned to a pattern of harmonics up to 200 but can be extended further.

The patterns of harmonics resembles the Fibonacci series that when played, results in in the reinforcement of tones and beats in the scales that interact with the environment producing standing waves and phantom like resonances that can shift around the room.

Kraig Grady, an Anaphorian now living in Australia, composes almost exclusively for acoustic instruments of his own making or modification tuned to just intonation. Often his work is combined with his Shadow Theatre productions.
