pact theatre presents: ‘the wasteland’
| Thursday, 4 March, 2010 |
| 8:00 pm | to | 10:00 pm |
T.S Elliot gave us the muscle and we put it in our muskets and will fire it upon thee. This event explores the five parts of The Wasteland as five music and live art scores. Each will be composed by a different ensemble, resituating storytelling, mythology, fragmented narrative and stylistic disorientation. Leave your cardigan & black-rimmed coke-bottle-bottomed specs on your bedside table with your copy of Gideon’s. This night will lead you into temptation, like a tele-evangelist into the school chapel.
featuring ’scissor lock’ (marcus whale) & ‘the brick ensemble’ (with musicians from the splinter orchestra)
thursday march 4th
Location: PACT theatre 107 Railway Parade, Erskineville

Jim Denley – solo
“I first started playing wind instruments seriously at the age of 10. Initially it was Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) and Roland Kirk that inspired me, but soon enough it was also the sound itself that led. 43 years later I still feel positive and unconstrained by the search.
The flute music from the Solomons, New Guinea and the Amazon is particularly inspiring these days. In much of the music from these regions the flute signals a wormhole to that which is beyond the everyday.
But truthfully these (for me) mediated influences are smaller than the influence of the playing itself. To be playful with sound, acoustics and duration is such a powerful force in my life. Sound, the potentials of instrumentalism, and a commitment to time/site specific work (improvisation) take me to those moments where, as Chris Mann says, ‘the part that is the whole, has no analysis.’
I don’t know why, but I’m very excited to be doing this Home Concert in Camperdown. It’s the first solo I’ve done in some time and it feels like a very good time to do it.”

sunday 14th february @ ‘bohemian grove’
7:30pm - 9:30pm
Formed in 2007, this Sydney-based trio has been developing their own approach to jazz improvisation. There is a controlled elegance to Roil’s music — not that this precludes the energetic. The music has an eddying quality that moves between group utterance and multi–stranded counterpoint, a weaving of textures that coagulate to form unified phrases before dispersing once more into the churning invention.
“A beautifully weighted trio, full of delicacy, mesmerizing accumulations of detail and engulfing power ” (John Clare)
