ZOOBOMBS (JAPAN) RETURN TO AUSTRALIA W/ MESA COSA + MORE!

Posted on: August 25th, 2012 by clare

Live! direct from Tokyo / Japan come one of a kind samurai rock ‘n’ roll superstars THE ZOOBOMBS!!

Born from the fevered mind of conductor/guitarist Don Matsuo, The Zoobombs traverse the treacherous outcrops of rock’n'roll, psych, garage and funk without so much as breaking a sweat and have assured themselves a cultish devotion all over the world.

With fans including The Flaming Lips & Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, as well as being huge hits at SXSW and named heroes of the Japanese New Wave by Rolling Stone, The Zoobombs are a band not to be missed.

Along for the ride are tour co-conspirators Mesa Cosa. Mexi-party garage noise ratbags and fans of the highest order, Mesa Cosa were so eager to see their favorite band perform that they are funding and organising the whole shebang themselves – airfares from Japan and all.

With more scope for damage than a final battle between Godzilla and Mothra, this beast of a tour awakens this August 17 at Melbourne’s venerated Tote Hotel.

ALANA BLACKBURN AND PETER FARRAR

Posted on: August 23rd, 2012 by clare

Thursday 23 August 2012, 7.30pm, Red Rattler Marrickville

Alana Blackburn (recorders) presents In varietate Concordia – unity through diversity, explores the tonal capabilities of the recorder, an instrument often overlooked, yet has stood the test of time. Alana performs a showcase of every aspect of the recorder, including a display of varying sizes and styles from the tiny sopranino to the large, square subcontra bass. Through compositions using fixed media, and live sampling and processing, Alana will perform Australian premieres together with a newly developed improvised performance with sound technologist Ben Carey.

Peter Farrar (saxophone) for a number of years has been working on various extended techniques for the saxophone that effect the overtone series, tuning and timbre/resonance of the instrument. This performance is an exploration into some unique sound worlds created by these innovations. Peter has been involved with free improvisation for ten years and has played with an interesting variety of musicians. These solo saxophone endeavours are about developing a language natural to the instrument that is not bound by stylistic or aesthetic inhibitions that one encounters in group-improvisational contexts.

}}}}MACHINE FOR MAKING SENSE (Denley, Mann [USA], Stewart, Rue)\\

}}}}POLLEN TRIO [ACT (Buckett, Dorian, Bukovsky)]//

}}}}RISHIN SINGH & SAM PETTIGREW performing ‘_truth, exercise for listener’ by MARTIJN TELLINGA [NE]

Machine For Making Sense started exploring relations between linguistics, poetry, speech, music, notions of sound, science and politics in 1989. They first played together after the ARS Electronica that year in Linz, Austria.
They were interested in grey areas between text and music, music and sound art, acoustic and electronic, improvisation and composition.
MFMS produced performances, tours, site-specific events, installations, recordings, broadcasts and inter-media collaborations. They have not performed as an ensemble since the early 2000s, but this August finds Chris Mann visiting Australia from New York and the group have taken this opportunity to re-assemble.
