JIM DENLEY and MONICA BROOKS at The People’s Republic of Australasia

Posted on: December 28th, 2011 by clare

Wednesday December 28th at 7 p.m.

JIM DENLEY
and MONICA BROOKS

at The People’s Republic of Australasia

with a very, very special Xmas surprise
for the People!!!

Monica Brooks and Jim Denley have been regular collaborators since they first met in 2002.
In recent years they have played together with the quartet Embedded, which recently toured New Zealand.
With West Head Project they have released a CD and in January they will play together at Mona Foma in Hobart.

Jim has played throughout Australia, Europe, Japan and the US with artists such as Chris Abrahams, Clare Cooper, Keith Rowe, Joel Stern, Robbie Avenaim, Jon Rose, John Butcher, Otomo Yoshide, Fred Frith, Phil Niblock, Trey Spruance, Clayton Thomas, Tess de Quincy, Axel Doerner, Adam Sussman, Ami Yoshida, Oren Ambarchi, Tony Buck, Ikue Mori, Satchiko M, Malcolm Goldstein and Annette Krebs.
‘This is music at it’s most primal, enhancing the beauty of creation.’ (John Shand – Sydney Morning Herald).
Jim has recently returned from concerts in Europe and South America.

Monica Brooks hails from the mountain tops of the western plains, primarily focusing on the relationship termites have to astronomical phenomena such as the aurora australis. Monica is often found playing few notes in slow succession on the piano accordion in West Head Project, Splinter Orchestra, Mayas/Altman/Brooks Trio, and she made Z grade celebrity status in the band formerly known as Ubercube. She also amuses herself with radios and guitar pedals in a trio with Anna Vo and Nadene Pita. Monica on occasion delves deep into the superficial habitats of indie music as a perpetual novice of the piano and computer, and thoroughly enjoys a good yodel with other beer-swilling slags around the Sydney sub-tropics. Monica has made a number of attempts to transform into an artist/sound sculptor, and used to spell her name with a ‘k’ to appear more exotic.
Monica’s piano is vastly different to her accordion…
in this concert she will play solo piano as well as playing with Jim.

THERE WILL BE THREE SETS ON THE NIGHT !!!

The Superusers

The Superusers was created by Australian-born-Berlin-based artist Scott Sinclair in 2010. Scott currently performs as the central member of the group in collaboration with like-minded artists from around the world.

The Superusers is a vehicle for artists to extend their practice into unknown territories. Members of The Superusers are involved in performance, music, film, programming, installation, literature, and costume. Members may incorporate their existing work from any medium, which is then adapted into a dynamic and cohesive audio-visual performance. The result is a retroactive combination of aggressive audio-visual media with the absurdist humor of dada and expanded cinema. The message is EXCESS!

The Superusers are here in Sydney with the support of NowNow for the NowNow Festival Launch playing as Botborg on Wednesday the 14th of December at Red Rattler.

The Great Klepto Debate: ‘That Property Is Theft’

Posted on: December 3rd, 2011 by clare

the 6th installment in Serial Space’s Great Debate Series aims for the jugular in the ongoing discussion in our communities about property rights, commercialization, corporatism, gentrification, art and increasing inequity:

TOPIC: THAT PROPERTY IS THEFT

Serial Space’s Great Debate Series has hosted some of Sydney’s most impassioned and articulate thinkers, arguing and discussing political, personal, private and popular topics: this debate will be no exception. Our speakers are:

AFFIRMATIVE
Dr Catriona Menzies Pike
Dr Bec Conroy
Mark Gawne

NEGATIVE
Dr Ann Deslandes
Dr Adam Jasper
Pip Smith

HOST
Dara Gill

Real Estate agents in Sydney are like celebrities, driving in fancy cars and driving up the cost of living. Increasingly the artistic community is feeling priced-out of the city. But, on the flip side, we work hard for a living, we need to be able to manage and organise our society and the concept of property is one way to do that. Can we potentially change it from within? Why not buy a family home and make it into a polyamorous commune? Or buy a forest and donate it back to Nature? Or design an amazing computer program that enables your Hacker-ARI to compete with Apple for global supremacy and sell it to all your friends to start the viral trend? Then again, maybe we all just want a big house and a flashy car and our banging on about inequity and gentrification is just a manifestation of jealousy for our best mates who chose finance instead of fine arts.

This debate will get the emotions fired up as a bunch of confident and savvy individuals with a trumped up sense of entitlement get serious about what they can actually claim to have and to hold as their own. And just in time for Christmas!
