MARK HAVRYLIV / JOSH DUBRAU (P[a]ra[pra]xis)
P[a]ra[pra]xis is an ongoing collaborative project incorporating a two- piece software package which explores human relations to language through dynamic text and sound production. The P[a]ra[pra]xis suite is adaptable to a wide range of performance applications; this particular work takes its inspiration from John Tranter’s pantoum “The Waiting Room”, and plays on the notion of metamorphosis in several ways.
Real time audio is generated based on the use of the pentatonic Malaysian pelog scale, playing on the heritage of the pantoum form. A tone is played at the end of each line and its pitch is selected based on changes to the original content of that line; in this way, melodic counterpoint is naturally derived from the repeating structure of the pantoum itself.
