2 sets of exploratory music from 4pm
* Baker Barnard Duo:
Laurie Scott Baker (Cardiff, Wales – electric upright bass, prepared bass, electronics) has been involved in improvisation and experimental music since the early 1960s. Together with George Neidorf, Freddie Payne and others, he performed free-form improvisations in 1964 at the Gas Lash, near Sydney’s Central Station, possibly the first free-form music of this kind in Australia. In 1965, after migrating to the UK, Laurie formed a close working relationship with Cornelius Cardew until Cardew’s untimely death in 1981. In 1972, Laurie founded People’s Liberation Music, the membership of which included Cardew, Keith Rowe, John Tilbury, Hugh Shrapnel and others. Two PLM archival CDs have since been released. Additionally, Laurie’s CD Liquid Metal Dreaming was released in 2008, while Gracility, archival recordings of his music from the late-1960s/early-1970s, was released in 2009. Laurie is currently preoccupied with taming the harmonic series on the double bass.
Geoffrey Barnard (Sydney – percussion, feedback, short-wave radio) was a member of David Ahern’s AZ Music group between 1970 and 1972, performing in compositions by John Cage, Terry Riley, Alvin Lucier, Cornelius Cardew, Roger Frampton and others. He was also a member of the electro-acoustic improvisation group, Teletopa, during this time.
Since the mid-1970s, his musical orientation has been primarily theoretical, and in 2003 he completed a Masters dissertation at the University of Technology, Sydney on the music of Cage, Cardew and Christian Wolff. For the past 5 years he has been training in the Japanese martial art, aikido, and currently holds the rank of 1st kyu.
